WWE made use of new cameras on Friday Night Smackdown last week, broadcasting using 8K cameras that are typically used for NFL on FOX games.
While the signal still went through 1080 HD rather than 8K, the difference was notable on screen, especially when it comes to depth of field, showing WWE Superstars “popping” out of the background.
FOX has been using these cameras during their NFL games to provide a better viewing experience and with Smackdown also airing on FOX, WWE was given an opportunity to “play” with the cameras.
The effect was also very visible last night on Raw when Asuka made her entrance and you could see the background slightly blurry.
WWE transitioned to HD in January 2008 after two years of tests and a $20 million upgrade to their television facilities. The next logical step is transitioning to 4K and although WWE has already done 4K testing, the broadcasts on both USA and FOX remain in high-def only.
