In what seems to be some surprising news, Cody Rhodes, the man behind the Stardust gimmick, has asked for his release from WWE.
“The past ten years have been quite the trek, but as of earlier today I have asked for my release from @WWE,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “I’ll speak further on the matter shortly. Thank you to all the pro-wrestling/sports entertainment fans worldwide. Thank you.”
It’s not clear why he asked for his release or what led to it. As of this writing WWE has not addressed the issue publicly.
Cody signed with the WWE in 2006 and was assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling until he was called up to the main roster a year later. He started his WWE career teaming up with Hardcore Holly however he gained some momentum when he joined The Legacy with Ted DiBiase and Randy Orton.
In 2010 he transitioned to his “Dashing” Cody Rhodes character and then joined Damien Sandow to form the popular Team Rhodes Scholars tag team. Following a program with his brother Goldust, he debuted the Stardust character in June 2014, a gimmick which he portrayed until his release.
During his WWE tenure, he won the Intercontinental title twice, the Tag Team titles three times and the World Tag Team Title three times as well.
