In a story that will appear in the December 17-24 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine, 16-time world champion John Cena admits that his time as the top guy in WWE is up as his wrestling career continues to diminish.
Cena, who has wrestled for WWE since 2001 as a developmental wrestler, has spent most of his time in the company as a main eventer ever since he defeated JBL to win the WWE title at WrestleMania 21 in Los Angeles. Long seen as one of the hardest-working individuals in the company, his time in WWE is getting shorter and shorter as he continues to follow the footsteps of fellow Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson into Hollywood.
Cena told Sports Illustrated that his job now is to do whatever is necessary to establish his successor in the WWE as the new face of the company, admitting that it’s a “giant relay race” where he’s just handing the stick off. “My time is up,” Cena said, a take on his WWE theme song which says “my time is now.” Cena continued, “Someone else’s time is now.”
But even if his in-ring career comes to a close, the popular Cena said that there are no plans to halt his philanthropic work that mainly comes due to his WWE work. “I’m not even close to done,” he concluded.
Cena will be back in WWE starting on December 26 for a dozen dates before he returns to filming a new movie.
